Keto Irish Soda Bread

Bread is one of the hardest things to give up when you switch to eating keto. I always missed having a thick slice of warm bread with dinner, especially around the holidays.

That is why I wanted to make this keto irish soda bread. It gives you that classic, hearty texture without all the carbs from regular white flour.

Easy homemade keto Irish soda bread loaf

Traditional soda bread is packed with wheat flour, but this version uses low carb ingredients so you can stay in ketosis. You get the same golden crust and dense crumb, but it fits your daily routine much better.

It comes together in just a few minutes with no yeast and no kneading required. You simply mix the ingredients, shape the loaf, and pop it into the oven.

I love to eat a warm slice with a generous layer of salted butter, or right next to a bowl of hot soup. It really feels like comfort food on a chilly day.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 cups Almond Flour
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Flour
  • 2 tbsp Psyllium Husk Powder
  • 1 tbsp Granulated Monk Fruit Sweetener
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Caraway Seeds
  • 4 tbsp Cold Unsalted Butter, Cubed
  • 2 Large Eggs

How To Make

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

Stir together the heavy cream, water and apple cider vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. This creates a simple keto buttermilk.

Step 3

In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, coconut flour, psyllium husk powder, sweetener, baking powder, baking soda, salt and caraway seeds. Rub the cold butter into the flour with your fingertips until it looks like coarse crumbs with pea sized pieces.

Step 4

Whisk the eggs into the buttermilk mixture, pour it into the dry ingredients and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Let it rest for 3 minutes to firm up.

Step 5

Shape the dough into a round loaf about 7 inches wide and place it on the baking sheet. Snip a deep cross across the top with kitchen shears.

Step 6

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch.

Step 7

Cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve with plenty of salted butter or alongside a hearty stew.

Tips

Keep The Butter Very Cold

From my experience, cold butter is the secret to getting a tender crumb instead of a dense loaf. If the butter gets warm while you work it into the dry mix, it will melt into the flour and make the dough oily.

I recommend keeping the butter cubes in the freezer for about 10 minutes before you start. Use your fingertips quickly so your hands do not warm it up too much.

Choose The Right Psyllium Husk Powder

You’ll get the best results if you use a fine, blond psyllium husk powder rather than whole husks. Whole husks will not absorb the liquid properly and can leave coarse specks in your bread.

I also suggest checking that your brand does not turn baked goods purple when heated. A light, pure powder keeps the interior looking just like traditional soda bread.

Do Not Skip The Dough Rest

The dough will look a bit wet and sticky right after you stir everything together. I’ve found that letting it sit for a few minutes gives the coconut flour and psyllium time to soak up the liquid.

Once that happens, the dough becomes much firmer and easier to shape into a round loaf with your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave out the caraway seeds?

Yes, you can leave them out if you dislike their distinct herbal flavor.

Skipping them gives the bread a milder taste that pairs easily with both sweet spreads and savory meals.
