Keto Bread Bowls

One of the things I missed most when I changed my diet was ordering warm soup in an edible bowl.

Regular bakery bread is full of carbs, so I had to leave those cozy meals behind for a while.

Warm homemade keto bread bowl for soup

That is why I decided to create my own keto bread bowls at home. They have a golden crust, a soft center, and they hold warm food without leaking.

This recipe is completely low carb and keto friendly, which means you can enjoy real comfort food without feeling heavy afterward.

You can fill them with your favorite hot chili, broccoli cheddar soup, or creamy chowder whenever you want a satisfying dinner.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Authentic Bread Texture – Psyllium husk gives these bowls a chewy crumb that feels just like real bakery bread.

Holds Soups Easily – Toasting the inside creates crisp walls that will not leak hot soups or thick chili.

True Comfort Food – You can enjoy classic restaurant bread bowls while staying completely on track with low carb living.

No Rising Required – This dough comes together fast without yeast, so you never have to wait for rising.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups Almond Flour
  • 2/3 cup Psyllium Husk Powder
  • 4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 6 Large Egg Whites
  • 4 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 1/2 cups Boiling Water
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Seeds, Optional

How To Make

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, psyllium husk powder, baking powder, salt and garlic powder.

Step 3

Add the egg whites and apple cider vinegar and start mixing with a hand mixer. Pour in the boiling water while mixing for about 30 seconds until the dough comes together and firms up.

Step 4

With wet hands, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape each into a tall, round dome about 4 inches wide. Place them 3 inches apart on the baking sheet and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.

Step 5

Bake for 65 to 75 minutes until the bowls are firm, browned and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 6

Let the bread cool completely. Cut a circle in the top of each one and scoop out the soft center, leaving walls about 1/2 inch thick. Save the scooped bread for croutons.

Step 7

Before serving, toast the hollowed bowls at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes so the inside crisps up and holds liquid. Fill with chili, broccoli cheddar soup or clam chowder.

Tips

Use Fine Psyllium Husk Powder

Make sure you use finely ground psyllium husk powder rather than whole psyllium husks. Whole husks will not soak up the boiling liquid properly, leaving your dough too wet and loose.

Some brands of psyllium husk turn baked goods a distinct purple color when heated. I recommend looking for blond psyllium powder so your bread bowls bake into a nice, golden brown color.

Make Sure the Water Is Truly Boiling

You want your water at a rolling boil right when you pour it into the mixing bowl. Warm water or hot tap water will simply not work for this recipe.

The boiling heat is needed to activate the psyllium fibers instantly. This quick heat reaction is what turns the wet ingredients into a workable dough that holds its shape.

Shape the Dough Taller Than You Need

I recommend keeping a small bowl of warm water nearby while shaping the dough. Wetting your hands stops the dough from sticking to your fingers and helps you smooth the outer surface easily.

Always shape each piece of dough taller than you want the final bowl to look. Low carb dough tends to spread outward slightly while baking rather than rising straight up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my bread turn purple?

Certain brands of psyllium husk powder naturally react to heat and baking powder by changing color.

It looks a bit strange, but it is completely safe to eat and will not change the taste at all.
